Orleans Travel Guide
Welcome to Orleans!
A short distance east of Canada—s Parliament Hill lies the suburban community of Orléans. An incorporated police village until the 1970s, Orléans is now a large, fast-growing suburb of Ottawa that—bordered by the city—s urban downtown to the west, rural farmland to the east and the Ottawa River to the north—blends urban living with a rural attitude. Much of the area—s growth has centred around the Place d—Orleans—one of Ottawa—s largest shopping centres—while the Shenkman Arts Centre is a city-owned, visual arts facility that serves as the cultural hub to Ottawa—s East End residents. Shopping and culture aside, the community also boasts one of eastern Ontario—s prettiest beaches—that of Petrie Island. The island is a chunk of scenic city parkland situated less than 12 km (7.5 mi) from the country—s seat of government and—formed by several sandbars along the Ottawa River—is home to turtles, wetland birds, walking trails, a nature centre and a marina that rents kayaks and canoes.Tourist Attractions
